Herbivory Rather than Root Competition and Environmental Factors Determines Plant Establishment in Fragmented Forests

چکیده

In fragmented forests, many factors can affect plant community establishment, including abiotic factors, below-ground root competition, aboveground seed predation, and seedling herbivory. Little is known about the relative effects of biotic affecting initial stage establishment: gemmation early survival. Here, we carried out a competition exclusion experiment herbivory (including predation) on 11 islands in Thousand Island Lake, China, using four native woody species that differed functional traits (e.g., mass dominance). The dominant showed highest survival, there was no significant linear relationship between proportion surviving seedlings island area under either treatment for any species. Compared to control excluding treatments, predation significantly increased survival after controlling environmental factors. However, had effect establishment. Our results suggest regeneration rare ecosystems may be limited more susceptible predators herbivores ecosystems. These have implications conservation diversity forests.

Phosphosite charge rather than shootward localization determines OCTOPUS activity in root protophloem.

Polar cellular localization of proteins is often associated with their function and activity. In plants, relatively few polar-localized factors have been described. Among them, the plasma membrane-associated Arabidopsis proteins OCTOPUS (OPS) and BREVIS RADIX (BRX) display shootward and rootward polar localization, respectively, in developing root protophloem cells. Both ops and brx null mutant...

Resistance and Susceptibility of Milkweed: Competition, Root Herbivory, and Plant Genetic Variation

Beetles in the genus Tetraopes share a long evolutionary history with milkweeds (Asclepias spp.), feeding on roots as larvae and leaves as adults. Despite their extreme specialization on milkweed, Tetraopes require drying grass stems as oviposition sites, even though they do not consume grass. The natural history of the interaction suggests that herbivory may be likely only when milkweeds are i...

Artificial Evolution by Viability Rather than Competition

Evolutionary algorithms are widespread heuristic methods inspired by natural evolution to solve difficult problems for which analytical approaches are not suitable. In many domains experimenters are not only interested in discovering optimal solutions, but also in finding the largest number of different solutions satisfying minimal requirements. However, the formulation of an effective performa...

Heart disease risk determines menopausal age rather than the reverse.

OBJECTIVES The purpose of this study was to investigate whether a harmful cardiovascular risk profile accelerates menopause. BACKGROUND Women with an early menopause are at an increased risk of cardiovascular disease. Although increased cardiovascular risk has been proposed as consequence of menopause, the alternative hypothesis, that increased premenopausal cardiovascular risk promotes early...

Insect Herbivory in Tropical Forests

In z.n address to inaugurate the invertebrate exhibit at the National Zoo, Washington, DC on Mav 7, 1987, E.O. Wilson called insects "the little things that run the world" (Wilson 1987a). In terris of their diversity, distribution, and abundance, insects are unrivaled as a global ecolo, gical and evolutionary force. "It needs to be repeatedly stressed that invertebrates as a whole are even more ...
